You’re Not Actually on Vacation

Every time I go on vacation, I play a slightly dumb little game with myself: how many days can I go without opening my email?

It sounds easy until you actually try it.

In this episode, I’m sharing why so many firm owners can’t disconnect, and a real three-move system one of my members used to unplug completely, even a week before a major tax deadline.

Listen below.

0:52 Before I’ve even left for a week off, that itch starts. Just a quick peek, what’s the harm? Here’s the harm: thirty minutes back at work while your family waits at the beach, wondering where you went.

2:05 After coaching hundreds of firm owners through this, I’ve come to believe not disconnecting comes down to one thing: not trusting things will hold together without you.

3:04 Deciding to stop worrying doesn’t work. Building the conditions that make worry unnecessary does.

5:36 Handing off the inbox solves the client-facing problem, so nobody notices you’re gone. The emergency channel solves temptation, killing the excuse to open your inbox. The running list solves dread.

6:26 These three moves won’t fix a firm that can’t run without your personal review on everything. The dependency problem is still sitting right where it was.

8:09 Test your readiness with a smaller version first, before a long weekend, not a two-week trip. One day, inbox handed off, see what breaks.

9:39 My best so far is two full weeks with zero inbox peeks. Tough record to break, but I’m going for it. What’s your record?
